Sampson breaks girls under-14 100 metres record

-Ageday/James set for showdown

North Georgetown athlete Jevina Sampson rewrote the history books when the 51st edition of the National Schools Athletics, Cycling and Swimming Championships continued yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Despite a late start due to inefficient organization and mid-morning rain the 400 metres gold medallist at this year’s Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) commanded the girls under-14 100 metres heats from start to finish as she clocked 12.4s doing away with the old record of 12.7s.

Junior sprint champion and East Coast athlete Chavez Ageday and under-23 200 and 400 metres champion Stephan James of South Georgetown will meet in a  classic 100 metres final showdown today.

Stephan James easily finishes ahead in the 100 metres heat one yesterday.

Ageday displayed pure power sprinting as he blasted out of the blocks before shutting down at 90 metres to clock 10.7s in his heats while James, an unfamiliar face to the 100 metres field, displayed his strength as he took over the race at the 50 metre mark to clock 11.0s for the win.

Under-16 sprinters Arinze Chance and Tevin Garraway will renew their youth days’ rivalry today as both athletes won their individual heats yesterday in times of 11.2s and 11.1s respectively.

Both Chance and Garraway looked comfortable in their heats as they finished easily ahead of their opponents.

Keon Lynch made a definite impact on the day as the technically-versed athlete sprinted away with the under-18 100 metres heats in 10.9 while his main challenger from North Georgetown, former youth sprint champion Kareem Naughton finished comfortably ahead of his opponents in a time of 11.2s.
Trevon George was also outstanding as he tactically ran away with his 800 metres heats in a time of 2:08s.

Under-18 sprinter Keon Lynch dominates as he finished ahead of his opponents in the 100 metres heats yesterday.

South Georgetown seemed to be a dominant force in the female sprints as their under-18 athlete Tiffany Carto and their under-20 athlete Letitia Myles both of whom represented Guyana at the Youth Commonwealth Games turned in times of 12.5 and 12.4 respectively to finish way ahead of their opponents in their individual 100 metres heats.
