CFU General Secretary steps down

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – General Secretary of the Caribbean Football Union Angenie Kanhai has cited the psychological toll the cash-for-votes scandal has taken on her as the reason for her decision to resign from the position.

Kanhai informed CFU members of the decision in a letter earlier this week and said the scandal which led to close to 20 CFU officials being sanctioned, FIFA Vice President Jack Warner of Trinidad & Tobago resigning from all football activities, and former Asian Football Confederation President Mohamed Bin Hammam being banned for life.

Warner and Bin Hammam were sidelined for their roles in allegedly offering inducements to CFU members to vote for the former AFC President over incumbent Sepp Blatter in the FIFA presidential election.

“I regret to have taken this decision at a time such as now, a period of upheaval and change, but I was forced to face, like all of you, the emotional, psychological and physical toll paid over the last months,” said Trinidadian Kanhai.

”As a result, I have made the decision to allow the opportunity and space for fresh eyes and minds, unsullied and unencumbered by the pressures of the past months to guide the CFU.”

She added: “This is a time to stimulate a new era of football in our region and my sincerest hope is that my resignation can indicate to you that acting in the best interest of the CFU is what we should all do, even if it requires some sacrifices.”
Media reports indicate that Kanhai was one of FIFA’s chief witnesses during the bribery investigations.
