BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Ronald Jones has emerged as another candidate for the vacant position of President of the Caribbean Football Union.
A local newspaper reported yesterday that Jones, the president of the Barbados Football Association and the Barbados Minister of Education, is soon expected to announce his candidacy for the vacant CFU position.
The newspaper said David Hinds, general secretary of the BFA, will also challenge for the same position at the CFU after incumbent Angenie Kanhai of Trinidad & Tobago resigned earlier this month.
The positions on the CFU executive have become vacant, following the cash-for-votes scandal in which several key figures were implicated.
Investigations by FIFA, the sport’s World governing body, revealed that CFU members were given US $40,000 bribes during a meeting last May in Trinidad to encourage them to vote for then FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam.
Former FIFA Vice President, CONCACAF and CFU President Austin “Jack” Warner resigned in disgrace following the revelations, and Bin Hammam was forced to withdraw his candidacy and was banned for life from involvement with the sport.
Subject to the approval of FIFA, the CFU delegates attending a meeting at FIFA headquarters in Zurich on December 21 are expected to select and ratify a new executive.
