Kwakwani Secondary still dominant in Titan’s Bowl Basketball Tournament

Kwakwani Secondary School appears to be the team to beat in the ongoing Titan’s Bowl basketball tournament as they racked up another stroke in the win column last Monday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall by defeating the University of Guyana (UG).

Kwakwani coming off their decimation of Queen’s College the previous night definitely proved their dominance as they trounced UG 63-34 at the final buzzer.

UG’s high turnover rate caused by the defensive pressure of Kwakwani along with UG’s relaxed 2-1-2 zone defence was enough to allow Kwakwani to blow the lead open midway into the first half. Kwakwani was able to march the ball easily up the court saving their energy as they penetrated the lane to get open shots or pass to their perimeter marksmen. With their saved energy on offence they were able to pressure UG for the whole 40 minute game as UG was never settled defensively or offensively.

Dominque Douglas led the way for Kwakwani scoring 26 points while grabbing four steals and he also initiated offence for his marksman shooter Kelvon Dajon who hit three consecutive three pointers early in the second half to end on 15 points and six steals.

Captain for UG, Leron Jackman was the highpoint man for UG with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Johnathoin Pooran made up for his one-man show on Sunday night as he scored 22 points along with four steals to lead Queen’s College to their first victory in the tournament as they defeated Bishops’ High School 58-46.

Pooran who is a crafty player and can weave his way around the defence of teams finished well at the rim during the game.

However it was the rebounding that really won the game for Queen’s as Akil Lewis was active on the glass,   collecting 14 rebounds for the night while finishing on nine points.

John Housty also contributed with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Bishops’ simply fell away as the game progressed as they were unable to score in the latter moments. Daniel Haynes and Rondel Holder played solidly recording stats of 10 points, 13 rebounds and 10 points 12 rebounds respectively.

Marian Academy lost their second straight game in the tournament as they fell to Linden Technical Institute (LTI) 34- 48.

LTI played their usual high octane offensive game as Marian sometimes failed to set up their 2-3 zone defence.

Marlon Pollydore had his second double digit game with 13 points while Jefferey LaRose scored 14 points as well for Linden.

Marian’s only player in double digit was Dominic Vincente as he showed shades of his former self since moving to Marian with 14 points.

Plaisance also walked away with a win as they downed New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS) 64-30.

Seasoned national junior player Nikkoloi Smith led the way for Plaisance with 18 points while his teammate Nicholas Cassius contributed 16 points to the win.

NAMS who never looked like contenders in the game saw Ryan Ceasar and Marti Weathersppon putting up 11 and 10 points respectively.
