Kwakwani gets into final of Titan’s Bowl basketball tournament

Kwakwani secured a spot in the final of the 2011 Titan’s Bowl basketball tournament yesterday when they defeated Plaisance Academy in the semifinal at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Dominique Douglas had his fourth consecutive game over 20 points with 24 to lead Kwakwani’s charge over Plaisance as the game ended 81-76.

The game was nothing short of exciting as both Plaisance  and Kwakwani were running the floor well and basically scoring fast break points with little defence on either side.

However, rebounds and second chance points were the deciding factors in the game as Douglas, Gilkes and Primo combined for a total of 42 rebounds. Douglas had 11 bounds while Gilkes and Primo collected 16 and 15 respectively. Primo and Gilkes were also effective on the offensive end as they scored 12 and 16 points respectively.

Kwakwani who defeated Bishops’ High School in their final group match last Tuesday night 81-24 held off a raging Nikkoloi Smith who led the comeback for Plaisance late in the game but came up short as he ended on 29 points and six rebounds.

His teammates Nicholas Cassius and Nduka Horatio contributed 25 points, 11 rebounds and 11 points and seven rebounds respectively.

University of Guyana (UG) was then ousted from the competition in the second semifinal as Lined Technical Institute (LTI) defeated them 53-65.

LTI, who defeated Plaisance in their final group match last Tuesday that finished 86-71, found it easy to penetrate the lane and score which enabled them to do away with UG as the latter found it hard to stop LTI from scoring and collecting rebounds.

Marlon Pollydore was once again the initiator of LTI’s offence as he scored 14 points and grabbed seven steals while his teammate was unstoppable on the glass collecting 16 rebounds and scoring 17 points.

Ryan Dey who played tirelessly for UG scored 21 points while Kadeem Peters was the only other player to contribute a meaningful score with eight points.
