GFA/Banks Beer Cup quarter-finals on today…Alpha United face stern test from Riddim Squad

Festive season action in the Georgetown Football Association Banks Beer Cup will kick off today with a quarter-final double-header at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground starting from 18:00hrs.

The opening and feature match will see tournament favourites Alpha “The Hammer” United, prevented from defending their Kashif and Shanghai crown, facing an experienced Riddim Squad side. Then home club team GFC will face Camptown to conclude the evening’s matches.

Both Alpha and Riddim got into the quarter-finals by virtue of defeating their respective opponents Charleston United FC and University of Guyana FC 11-0 and 3-1.

Alpha will be again be banking of the trio of Golden Jaguars players in Dwight Peters, Ronson Williams and Anthony “Awo” Abrams to have a major impact on the outcome of the game.

On the other hand, the Rididm squad outfit, dominateAdd an Imaged by a trio of families namely; the Stewarts (Orville and Dorville), the Hopes (Ceon, Stephan and Sheldon) and the Ramseys (Lylliton, Aamos and Rawle) will be hoping to upset Alpha, a team they defeated in the Mayor’s Cup tournament earlier this year.
In an invited comment, Alpha coach Wayne “Wiggy” Dover and Riddim Squad President Mark Xavier gave their thoughts about today’s game.

“After winning the first, which was about 10 days ago, we have been working extensively to keep the boys match ready, since such a break between games is not ideal. Nevertheless the guys are fully prepared for today’s game and we have full respect for opponents who we know are a dangerous side”, said Dover.
And a confident Xavier said:“If Riddim Squad rises to the occasion I don’t see why we can’t win this game, Alpha have proven themselves as the top side in the country in recent years, but we managed to topple them earlier in the year, so at least we know it’s not a task beyond us.”
