East Coast women record 36-run victory over West Bank

East Coast recorded a comfortable 36-run victory over their West Bank Demerara counterparts in the opening game of the 2011 Female Inter-Association Cricket 50-overs Tournament at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Ground yesterday.

East Coast skipper Reneka Isaacs won the toss and she elected to make first use of the inviting DCC batting surface. Her side eventually was dismissed for a respectable 150 in 40.2 overs with extras being the top score with 60.

The highest scoring batters were opener Fay Franklyn who made an unbeaten 45 and skipper Isaacs with 26.

Nalini Sumitra led the bowling honours for the West Bank side with outstanding figures of 8.5-1-20-6.

West Bank Demerara in reply seemed on the brink of a  collapse as they stumbled to 42 for 7 at one stage. But an innings reviving eight-wicket partnership of 69 by West Bank skipper Tracy Glasgow (who also carried her bat throughout the innings) 29 not out and number eight batter Jeanette Daniels who made a painstakingly slow 2 and a flood of bowling extras from the East Coast side seemingly swung the game towards the West Bank ladies.

But after Daniels was dismissed leg-before with the score on 111 to left armer Angela Waldron, who was the pick of the East Coast bowlers with 3 wickets, the West Demerara innings quickly folded at 114 all out in 32.1 overs.

The competition continues today with East Bank tackling Georgetown at DCC from 9.30am.
