Overnight and early morning rain washed out all hopes of play on the first day of the fourth round of the West Indies Cricket Board Under-19 three day competition at the various venues in Georgetown yesterday.
The Guyana/Windward Islands clash at Bourda was the first to be rendered unplayable for the day. The players didn’t even turn up to the venue as the match referee and former West Indies fast-bowler Colin Stuart informed playersand the press as early as 10 am, that play for the day would be impossible due to the heavily water-logged outfield.
This is major set-back for the home side wich languishes in fourth place on the point’s table going into the penultimate round.
The Guyana players preferably needed the total three days in an effort to push for full points from their encounter against the defending champions, the Windward Islands.
Over at the Demerara Cricket Club and Everest Cricket Club grounds respectively, the inevitable was prolonged slightly longer.
The umpires made various inspections on the slightly less water-logged outfields in comparison to Bourda. Those checks were made throughout the morning, in an effort to try and salvage some play as the sun came out in the afternoon.
However, the edges of the boundaries at these venues had too much water while the square had not dried sufficiently.
Play was called off at the Everest Cricket Club following the inspection half an hour before the scheduled tea interval while the match at DCC was called off half an hour after lunch.
Play at all three (3) venues weather permitting is scheduled to commence at 9:30am today. But with a bleak weather forecast and poor drainage, fans should not hold their breath to see any cricket over the next two days.
