Shahadat returns but Junaid axed for Windies tour

DHAKA, Bangladesh,  CMC – Selectors have recalled seamer Shahadat Hossain, called up uncapped all-rounder Elias Sunny but axed attractive batsman Junaid Siddique for the limited overs series against West Indies starting here next week.

Shahadat was named in an 18-man squad for the three One-Day Internationals while Elias is part of a 14-man unit for the one-off Twenty20 International.

Bangladesh will also host West Indies in two Tests in the tour running from October 7 to November 2.

Shahadat last played for Bangladesh on the tour of England last year when he was inconsistent despite a five-wicket haul in the first Test at Lord’s.

The experienced 25-year-old has already played 29 Tests and 46 ODIs.

Elias, meanwhile, has gained favour with selectors after a good run in the recently concluded Bangladesh Cricket Board Cup.

“Sunny is someone we wanted to try because he has been doing well in the Premier League and also recently in the BCB Cup and the four-dayer,” said chief selector Akram Khan.

Junaid, however, has not been so fortunate. He played the last of his 54 ODIs against Zimbabwe last month but has not been retained.

Following the T20I on October 11, Shahadat, Sohrawardi Shuvo, Shahriar Nafees and Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury will join the squad to form the ODI unit.

Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim will lead both sides.

West Indies will play two tour matches in Fatullah on October 7 and 9 before facing the hosts in the opening international.
