Edwards’ double takes T&T’s Defence Force to victory over Milerock

Michael Edwards netted a double to take the Trinidad and Tobago’s Pro League champions Defence Force to a 4-0 win over host Milerock in their home-and-away second round tie of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club championship, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground last Sunday evening.

Three minutes after Edwards’s insertion into the game he hammered in his first goal in the 60th minute and doubled up a few minutes later in the 67th.

STRIEK FORCE! From left, Kerry Joseph, Richard Roy and Michael Edwards.

Milerock on home soil found themselves under immense pressure from the army lads who quickly netted an early goal in the eighth minute with a strike from midfielder Kerry Joseph after sloppy work from Milerock’s goalkeeper, Dereck Carter.

However, Milerock showed signs of life but   failed to capitalize on the chances and were soon left in a bewildered state as forward Richard Roy blasted a shot 35 metres out past Carter to score in the 31st minute to make the score 2-0.

Milerock again failed to score in the 50th minute.

Collie Edwards, who shouldered Milerock’s thrust for most of the game, fed Allister Johnson a pass that he finished with an athletic snap shot but was denied by the army’s goalkeeper, Kevin Graham.

Milerock made a change in the 68th minute to shake things up with Steve ‘Parrot’ Breweley going to the bench for Owen Williams. Two other changes occurred with Randy Jerome coming in for Oswald Benjamin and Ryan Crandon for an injured Johnson in the 73rd minute, but Milerock failed to convert yet again and even a penalty shot by Kayode McKinnon was saved by a diving Graham in the dying minutes of the game.

Three minutes later the Defence Force brought on Anton Joseph for Sean Norris, as if the 4-0 advantage was not enough for the home side.

Milerock will head to Trinidad and Tobago facing an uphill battle to overcome the Defence Force’s 4-0 away cushion, which places tremendous pressure on the visiting side in their mission to reach the final four.
