Camptown defeat Conquerors to take crown

Mayor’s Cup Tournament…

Sunburst Camptown produced a stirring performance against Fruta Conquerors in the final of the Mayor’s Cup Knockout Tournament which earned them the title Thursday night at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground.

In the highly anticipated final Camptown inflicted a 2 – 0 beating on the opposition while Pele needled Alpha United in the third place showdown prior to the final.

Stabroek Sports Photographer Orlando Charles caught some of the action in the final between Camptown and Conquerors in the Mayor? Cup Knockout Tournament.

Camptown received one million dollars after the tournament win while Conquerors received $500,000 for being the runners-up.

Pele and Alpha United walked away with the $200,000 and $100,000 third and fourth place prizes respectively.

Camptown had a narrow advantage over Conquerors in the early stages of the match as the two sides seemed to be playing matching football.

However, it was Camptown’s Peter Parks who shifted the balance of the game when he drew first blood for his side in the 12th minute. Following that goal it became a see-saw battle that had spectators at the edge of their seats with both teams trading close shots at each other’s goal.

The final half resumed with Fruta Conquerors still in the hunt for the equalizer but Camptown, in a smart move, defended stoutly while launching the occasional counter attack.

Conquerors did play good football all around bout it was not enough to get Camptown off their beat.

Two minutes to regulation time Devon Forde sealed the deal with a late goal that completely took the fight out of Conquerors.

In the grudge match with Alpha United and Pele, the latter exacted their revenge with a nerve racking one goal win. The star-studded third place showdown had junior national striker Sheldon Holder upsetting the score line in the 38th minute for Pele.

That goal proved too much for the Alpha United squad since they could not tear down the Pele defensive which was well organized.

The presentation of prizes to the top teams and top individual performers is to be made at a date to be announced.
