Eagles are the Greatest of the Streets!

Eagles squeezed past Retrievers Unknowns 3-2 to lift the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Futsal football tournament in front of a mammoth crowd at the Mackenzie market squad Saturday evening to bring the curtains down on the Linden leg of the series.

In a closely fought encounter, the youthful Eagles sent their supporters into wild celebrations when Deon Charter scored their first goal in the 5th minute and they held on to the lead throughout the first half.

Trenton Lashley pushed the Eagles further into the lead in the 23rd minute  but Deon Mc Kinnon pulled one back for Retrievers  Unknowns  one minute later.

Lashley completed a double when he converted in the 29th minute as Eagles looked like heading for a comfortable victory but almost of the blast of the final whistle Darell George scored for Retrievers Unknowns but his effort was in vain.

Eagles took home the first place trophy and $400,000 cash prize while the runner up team secured the second place trophy and $250,000.

In the battle for third place, Half Mile/One Mile edged out Coomacka  4-3 in another entertaining encounter.

Trevor Tudor scored the game’s opener in the 2nd minute for Half Mile/One Mile but Keron Daw equalizer for Coomacka two minutes later.

Half Mile/One Mile dominated play midway into the match with Colric Beckles (10th), Shawn Gittens (20th) and Steve Brewley (22nd) all scoring before Adrian Edmondson bounced back with a double for Coomacka  in the 26th and 27th minutes.

Half Mile/One Mile carted off the $150,000 third prize while Coomacka secured $75,000 for their effort.

In two Exhibition  games, a Guinness select team proved to strong for Bankers Trust winning the encounter 7-4 while Star Girls nipped Speightland Butterflies 1-0 in a female match.

Thirty two teams took part in the tournament that was staged in the mining community for the first time sponsored by local beverage giants Banks DIH Ltd. under the Guinness brand.

Linden Branch Manager Shondell Easton, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste and Communications Manager Troy Peters presented the prizes to the top teams.
