Grenadian Joseph scores penalty in Revs’ loss

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts, CMC – Shalrie Joseph continued to give proof of his confidence in taking penalty kicks, but Alejandro Moreno upstaged him with a pair of goals that handed Chivas USA a 3-2 victory the New England Revolution on Saturday in Major League Soccer.

After the Revs fell behind by two goals on the hour mark, Joseph stroked home his seventh goal of the season, his fourth from the charity spot this season, to cut the lead. Joseph’s work was short-lived however, and Moreno restored the two-goal lead for Chivas before second-half substitute Diego Fagundez gave the Revs late, vain hope of overturning the deficit again.

Revs head coach Steve Nicol gave Fagundez his MLS debut after 66 minutes, and the 16-year-old drew a penalty within two minutes of taking the field.

He tempted Heath Pearce into a tackle just inside the Chivas USA penalty area, and referee Mark Kadlecik pointed to the spot, despite bitter protests from the visitors.

Joseph ignored those claims and thumped home the resulting penalty kick in the 70th minute.

Chivas were again leading by two goals 10 minutes later, when they carved up the Revs defence, and Ante Jazic played the ball into the area, and Moreno turned it home for his second goal of the night.
