Four lbs cocaine found near airport fence

Police say that at about 1645h yesterday, acting on information received, Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri security officials found a packet containing 1 kilogram, 978 grams of cocaine in the vicinity of the western perimeter fence.

Linden pact sealed

The government and the Region Ten leadership last evening sealed an agreement for the development of Linden, after the Donald Ramotar administration gave in to objections over one of the terms for the inquiry into the July 18 fatal shooting of protestors in the town.

Oil explorer renews licence for Takutu Basin

The Takutu Oil and Gas Inc and the Government of Guyana have concluded a renewal agreement and as a result the former will recommence exploration for oil along the Takutu Basin, which had started in 2010, says a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA).

Ethiopians mourn strongman ruler Meles, dead at 57

ADDIS ABABA,  (Reuters) – Thousands of Ethiopians descended on the centre of the capital Addis Ababa yesterday to mourn Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, their firm-handed ruler of more than two decades, whose body was flown home after his death in a Brussels hospital at 57.

CANU did not request the detention of Jeannine Gittens’ container

Dear Editor, I refer to a letter in your publication of August 20, 2012 captioned ‘No explanation from CANU’ and wish to categorically state the following: At no time did the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) request the detention of any container being shipped by Ms Jeannine Gittens When CANU desires to conduct a search operation on any container the Guyana Revenue Authority is informed and the necessary procedure engaged.
