Sara Johanna woman mowed down by bus

A 20-year-old East Bank Demerara woman was on Friday night killed when she was struck by a minibus a short distance from where a car had crashed into a sand truck last week killing three persons.

Sara Johanna resident Alana Persaud, aka Paula, was hit by the bus sometime close to midnight while returning home from a family function.

The woman’s mother Lilawattie ‘Mala’ Persaud yesterday told Stabroek News that the family is still trying to come to grips with the sudden demise of the young woman and was too distraught to speak.

Persaud was hit as she spoke with a relative on the roadway. She was rushed to the East Bank  Demerara Regional Hospital at Diamond where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be performed on her body today to determine the cause of death.

The driver of the minibus is in Police custody at the Grove Police Station and is likely to be charged and placed before the Providence court sometime today.
