There is no substitute for a well-kept lawn

Lawn grass needs as much attention as any other plant.  With the heavy rainfall we are getting at the moment, the grass on your lawn may well be showing signs of distress.

The most important thing to remember is that if you want a good lawn, you must make sure you have good drainage around it.  You would also need to spike your lawn with a fork.

The spikes should penetrate the soil to a depth of approximately 3-4 inches; this breaks the surface to allow air and water to gain access to the roots.

Push the fork into the soil at intervals, flexing it back and forth to loosen the turf and soil. After that, add a lawn fertilizer thinly and water it immediately to avoid burning the grass. You should repeat this fortnightly until the grass improves.

Alternatively, you can use Miracle Gro All Purpose Fertilizer to cover the lawn at a strength of 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water every 7-14 days.

A good lawn should be level, trim and uniform.  All uneven patches should be filled with soil, and small pieces of grass with roots can be used to fill up the open patches.

You can take these small patches of grass from the edges to do this. Also remove all weeds and dead grass immediately.
Just to emphasise again: drainage is the key to a well-kept lawn.

There is no substitute for a beautifully kept lawn.  It forms a perfect backdrop for trees, shrubs, herbaceous borders and garden features.

Until next week, Happy Gardening!
