Ponytail palm: Not really a palm

The Beaucarnea recurvata comes from the Liliaceae family, and is commonly called the Ponytail or Bottle palm.

It originates from Mexico, and although it is sometimes referred to as a Ponytail palm, it is not really a true palm. Rather it is a true succulent.

This tough plant with an unusual appearance has a swollen or bulbous base, topped by a rosette of linear, pendulous green leaves which are rough and narrow – hence the popular names.

The Ponytail stores water at the base, so you should only water moderately and allow the soil to dry out.  Plant it in well-drained soil in a pot.  Fertilize with Osmocote Slow Release Plant Food or Miracle Gro All Purpose once per month.  It can be planted indoors or outdoors under semi-shade.  This plant is a showpiece to have.

Until next week, Happy Gardening!
