GGDMA celebrates record gold declaration

The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has congratulated all miners who helped it to surpass its target and with a record gold declaration of over 360,000 ounces in 2011.

“This is a significant achievement as the local small and medium scale miners have declared more than what was the peak production of Omai Gold Mines Limited in 2001 when the largest gold mine in this part of the world declared 354,300 ounces,” the GGDMA said in a press release.

It added it had a target of 320,000 ounces which was set earlier in the year.

The GGDMA also recognises the direct and indirect contributions of mining to other sectors of Guyana’s economy such as road, river and air transportation services to the hinterland; heavy earth moving machinery and other mining equipment supplies; and the many other support services which sustain major interior communities such as Bartica, Port Kaituma, Mahdia and Matthews Ridge.

The association restated its commitment to mining with the environment in mind and called on miners to continue selling their production to the Guyana Gold Board and licensed buyers.

It also called on the government and stakeholders to support its endeavours for the betterment of Guyana.
The GGDMA also said it is looking forward to celebrating its 30th year this year with great optimism that it will exceed 360,000 ounces of gold declared.
