Elderly Guyanese dies after NY fire

An elderly female Guyanese died from smoke inhalation in a fire in the Woodhaven section of Queens on Friday.

Reports say that Bhagrathiya Algu, 85, formerly of Ankerville, Port Mourant was unable to jump over the window of the second floor apartment of the two-family attached building.  Algu, commonly known as Pemya, was rescued by fire men and taken by emergency ambulance to Queens Jamaica Hospital where she was stabilized.  But she succumbed to her injuries.

Reports from New York say that a wake was held for Pemya on the evenings of Saturday and Sunday at McDonald’s Funeral Home.  Her remains were due to be cremated on Monday according to Hindu rites.  Pemya is survived by two sisters, Rini and Betty, a dozen nephews and nieces in New York.
