T&T man shot dead at wake

(Trinidad Express) A 58-year-old Port of Spain man is dead and two of his friends injured after they were ambushed by two gunmen while attending a wake near their homes in East Dry River on Thursday night.

The victim has been identified by police as Wayne Welchers, of Callender Street.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port of Spain General Hospital after he was shot multiple times while attending a wake.

Police have identified the injured men as Kenrick Alfred, 68, of Herman-Scott Street, East Dry River; and Haynes Elmon, 71, of Callender Street.

Alfred was shot in the left upper back and arm, while Elmon was shot in the right arm. Both men remain warded at hospital, in stable condition.

Officers said around 9.05 p.m. Welchers, Elmon and Alfred were attending a wake for a woman at the corner of Herman-Scott and Callender Streets, when two men approached and opened fire in their direction.

Police believe the incident may have been a case of mistaken identity.

Ag Sgt Sheldene Bacchus, Cpl Hinkson and PC Narine were among the officers from the Region I Homicide Bureau of Investigations and the Besson Street CID to visit the scene.

Bacchus is probing the incident.
