Cops still to hold suspect in Zeelugt cemetery murder

The police are yet to apprehend the man suspected to have information about the murder of 40-year-old Afrozie ‘Lizzie’ Ali of Lot 56 Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, whose nude body was discovered at a cemetery in Zeelugt on Sunday.

According to Aftab Ali, the brother of the dead woman, a post-mortem examination was expected to be performed her remains yesterday but when they arrived at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour at Best Village, West Coast Demerara they were informed that the police never requested a PME to be performed on the woman’s remains.

“The police tell us to go to the parlor at 9 am for a post mortem and Ezekiel said that the police didn’t arrange with them to cut she,” Ali said.

He also added that the police are making no effort to have the suspect apprehended because they did not visit the village again to search for him nor did they inform them of any developments.

Meanwhile, the police are saying that they are awaiting the post-mortem report to proceed with the matter further.

Ali said the suspect ‘Sonny’ is a known drug addict who lives in the community and he was the one to inform him about his sister’s murder. However, relatives and residents in the area said that although Sonny is a known drug addict he was never violent to anyone.

One of the victim’s sisters said that she was found nude in the cemetery and the only piece of clothing that was discovered was her underwear a few metres away from her. She added, “her feet was sprawled and her whole inside come out”.

They were all frustrated that the police have been unable to apprehend Sonny despite running after him several times.

Ali said they will have to go back to have the PME completed on Wednesday and if there are no hiccups they will have the funeral the same day.

Ali is the second woman to be murdered for the year thus far. The first was 68-year-old Bebe Jahooral Banu who was discovered on New Year’s Day in the bottom flat of her home in a semi nude state. Her dentures and wrist watch were discovered out of the apartment which caused the police to believe that there was a scuffle before she was taken to the apartment.

A PME performed later revealed that she died due to manual strangulation. The police are yet to charge anyone with her murder.
