Ganja smoker sentenced to six months community service

A 29-year-old man from Norton Street who had 3 ½ grams of cannabis in his possession was yesterday fined $3,000 and ordered to serve six months community service after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Anthony Garraway who resides at 71 Norton Street, Lodge, admitted that on January 14 at Georgetown, he had in his possession 3 ½ grams of cannabis.

When asked by the court if he smokes the illegal substance, the defendant replied in the affirmative.

When asked, the prosecution related to the court that the facts are as charged after which no further details of what transpired on the day in question were presented.

The presiding magistrate then informed Garraway that he was fined $3,000 and ordered to do community service for six months.

He was ordered to report to the sergeant of the East La Penitence Police Station at 9:00 am today.
