Anna Regina gets compactor truck from ministry

Minister within the Ministry of Local Government Norman Whittaker yesterday handed over a compactor truck to the Anna Regina Municipality at the Ministry’s compound in Kingston.

Whittaker said that the Anna Regina Municipality is the cleanest municipality in the country and saw the donation by his Ministry as a means of boosting efforts to maintain the cleanliness of the town.

Local Government Minister Norman Whittaker (second from left) hands over the key of the compactor truck to the Mayor of Anna Regina, Sammy Rampersaud.

At present the Municipality collects garbage using its tractor and trailer within a seven-mile radius from over 1000 households and with the area developing, the Mayor Sammy Rampersaud said that the truck will be of immense benefit to them and their people.

He lauded the Government for the donation and added that this will boost their cleaning efforts and at the same time he assured them that the truck will be well cared for.

The truck is the ninth of ten secured by the ministry during the latter part of last year to the tune of $38M from National Hardware, and it has already handed out one each to Rose Hall, New Amsterdam, Corriverton, Diamond and the Ministry of Public Works while the Georgetown Municipality got three.

However, the Georgetown Municipality trucks have been inoperable for a while now and according to reports the municipality does not have the means to repair the truck.

Responding to this, Minister Whittaker said “I have not received no written or verbal indication that the trucks are not working and it is the Municipality’s responsibility to care and repair their equipments”.
