Members of the Tuschen Community Policing Group yesterday apprehended a man wanted in connection with the murder of Afrozie ‘Lizzie’ Ali, whose nude body was discovered in the cemetery at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo on Sunday.

Police said that the man, known as “Sonny,” was apprehended at around 09:30am by the community policing group and later handed over to them.

Aftab Ali, Ali’s brother, said when the man was held, he implicated another man, who was also taken into custody.

Relatives of the dead woman and residents in the area said that “Sonny” is a known drug addict but has never been violent to anyone.

Ali, 40, of Lot 56 Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, was found on Sunday at the cemetery nude.

A post-mortem examination was conducted on her remains yesterday and revealed that she died from asphyxiation due to manual strangulation and blunt trauma to the head.

Ali operated a stall at the Parika Market, but stopped selling after an accident a few years ago. She, who is survived by four children, was buried yesterday.
