AFC clinches Region Eight chairmanship

The Alliance For Change (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) shared the spoils of the Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni) Regional Democratic Council election capturing the Chairmanship and Vice-Chairmanship respectively yesterday.

During the meeting of the Regional Democratic Council yesterday, the AFC’s Mark Crawford was elected Chairman of the mineral rich region. Vice-Chairman is Cornell Edwards of APNU.

Commenting on the results of the meeting, AFC member David Patterson said, “The Regional Chairman for Region 8 is Mark Crawford, a long standing member of the Alliance For Change (AFC) as well as a former regional councillor in the last term.”

Patterson said that Crawford’s candidacy was supported by the AFC and APNU.

“We have already met with the APNU and we are meeting any moment now to work out an agenda for the region. We are willing to work with every single person including persons from the tripartite committee,” he said.

According to Patterson, the AFC believes that Region 8 should be a pivotal region not only in the political sense but in the sense of the economy of Guyana because of the mineral wealth.

The AFC garnered six seats in Region 8, following the November 28, 2011, general elections. APNU and PPP/C each managed to get four seats and TUF 1.
