No work permit, Guyanese deported from T&T

(Trinidad Guardian) An order was issued for the immediate deportation of Guyanese national Allian Gilgeous yesterday after he was convicted of working in T&T without a permit. Gilgeous, 31, of Georgetown, appeared before San Fernando magistrate Alicia Chankar who found him guilty of the July 14, 2011, immigration offence. In passing sentence, Chankar told Gilgeous: “You are not supposed to be engaging in employment. “The complainant (Cpl Joseph Corraspe) said you are allowed to work up to 30 days but you must report it upon entry.”

Chankar pointed out that a stamp authorising work within the country was issued upon entry. “You did not meet these requirements,” she said as she reprimanded and discharged him and issued an immediate deportation order. The magistrate ordered that Gilgeous be placed in the custody of immigration officials to await deportation. Last year, Gilgeous was granted six months’ entry on vacation. Three days after his arrival, however,  he was arrested and charged with engaging in employment. He was not the holder of a valid work permit. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
