A fee of six thousand dollars will now be charged for marriage licences, based on a recommendation made by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee told reporters at a press conference recently that in the past there was no fee charged for two persons who are being married in Guyana. He said that this new development received approval from Cabinet.
Rohee later explained that there are three categories of marriages, local to local; two non residents and a local to non resident.
This new fee system will apply to all three categories.
The Minister in responding to questions on the issue explained that the reasoning behind the new fee system was that government had been subsidizing the licensing for many years. “There was no cost attach to it at all. There are a considerable number of marriages taking place in our country”, he stated, noting that there is a huge administrative cost.
He explained that besides the printing of the marriage certificates, a person may lose it and would go to the Registry requesting copies.
