Brazilian miner killed after ATV overturns

A Brazilian miner was killed and another man sustained minor injuries when the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) they were travelling on turned over several times on Sunday at Jonestown, Port Kaituma.

Dead is Joaodo Deus Silva, 46, of Port Kaituma, North West District (NWD). Winston Bernard, 22, also of Port Kaituma was treated for minor injuries at the Port Kaituma Hospital and sent away.

Police said in a press release yesterday that around 10:00 hs Deus Silva was driving the ATV along the roadway when he lost control of the vehicle which turned over several times.

As a result Silva and the pillion rider Bernard sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital where Silva was pronounced dead on arrival while Bernard was treated.

This is the second incident of this nature to have occurred in the North West.

Police had reported that around 17:00 hours last Friday, Deon Fernandes, 28, of Mabaruma, NWD, was driving an ATV at Baramita, NWD, when he lost control of the vehicle which turned over several times. He received injuries and was air-dashed to Georgetown where he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Hospital.
