Cuyuni murder accused charged, remanded

A 20–year-old man was charged yesterday with the murder of 53-year-old mining camp watchman, Kumar Plummer whose trussed-up body was found at Arimu Backdam, Cuyuni about seven days ago.

Esa Thomas was remanded to prison on the charge which states that between February 14-15 he murdered Plummer. The accused was not required to plead to the capital offence after it was read to him by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

No facts were presented to the court by the prosecution. Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai requested that the man be remanded to prison and that the matter be transferred to the Bartica Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution and the man was remanded to jail. The matter will be called again on March 24 at the Bartica Magistrates’ Court for report and fixture.

According to reports, on the day of the incident the deceased was guarding a mining camp and the accused went there requesting some gold. The accused then tied up the deceased and subsequently left the camp. Police said that investigations revealed that Plummer was employed as a watchman for some mining equipment by a miner. The man was found on the site with his feet and hands tied with polythene rope. A piece of rope was also seen around his neck.
