UG sick-out to continue

Executive members of the two unions – University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU) and the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) – met with the University’s negotiating team at the Ministry of Labour today in an effort to reach an agreement for the resumption of work on the Turkeyen campus, a statement from the unions said.

The unions have launched various forms of protest ever since the dismissal of lecturer Freddie Kissoon but have made it clear that their actions relate to much broader matters at UG.

According to Dr Mellissa Ifill, spokesperson for the unions, the discussions were cordial and they were able to reach agreement on many issues, except on the matter of procedures pertaining to staff dismissal, the statement by the unions said.

Talks are expected to resume on Wednesday, February, 22 at 13:30 h.

Meanwhile, the sick-out on the Turkeyen campus continues for another day on Wednesday, February 22.
