Wife assault accused granted $20,000 bail

A 43-year-old man accused of assaulting his reputed wife at Port Kaituma was yesterday placed on $20,000 bail after he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that on February 15 at Citrus Grove, North West District, Rowland Albert unlawfully assaulted Michelle Boye so as to cause her actual bodily harm. The father of three pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him.

Attorney-at-law Euclin Gomes made a successful application for bail for his client. The attorney assured the court that if bail is granted to his client the man will attend all his court proceedings. He told the court that the VC went to his client’s home at Citrus Grove, Port Kaituma and attacked him during a misunderstanding. The attorney pointed out to the court that police informed his client that the VC has to be charged.
No facts were presented to the court on what had transpired on the day of the incident.

After listening to the attorney’s application, the prosecution had no objection to bail but said that based on the police facts, contrary to what the attorney highlighted, the VC and the accused were residing at the same home when the incident occurred.

After granting bail the magistrate warned the accused to stay out of trouble.
The matter was transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates’ Court for report and fixture on March 5.
