Sugar supplies to Caricom states affected by industrial action

The Guyana Sugar Corporation today said that a strike at its bagging and packaging location at Blairmont has delayed its ability to meet marketing commitments to sister Caricom states.

Beset by debt woes, GuySuCo is also battling industrial unrest at several estates and poor weather.

In a statement today, the corporation said that the start of grinding at the Enmore estate has also been delayed because of “erratic weather conditions” over the last five weeks.

GuySuCo said that as it anxiously awaits the start of operations it is cognizant of the effect this delay has on shipments to regional customers and appealed for forbearance.

“Careful consideration was also given to suggestions to import extra-regional sugar but transit time from the nearest sources in Central America is no less than six weeks and by that time, GuySuCo will be in a position to deliver on our commitments”, the statement added.
