Duo on $50,000 bail over gold band theft

Two men, accused of stealing a gold band from a woman, were yesterday placed on $50,000 bail each by Magistrate Alan Wilson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that Shaka McKenzie of Lot 7 River View, Ruimveldt, and Shadick Hunt, of Lot 69 Durban Street, on Sunday, in Georgetown, stole a gold band, worth $120,000, property of Joycelyn Williams.

The prosecution objected to bail, citing the prevalence of the offence and contending also that if granted bail the accused might commit similar offences.

The attorney for the two accused, however, argued that the seriousness of the offence was not adequate grounds for bail to be refused since all cases are serious.

Magistrate Wilson granted bail to both lads and ordered them to appear in court again on March 16.
