Illegal gun, ammo lands man behind bars

Colin Martin was yesterday sentenced to a four-year prison term for the possession of an unlicensed gun and ammunition found on him during a police search.

Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday sentenced Martin and fined him $100,000 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Martin pleaded guilty to the gun and ammunition charges levelled against him and the sentence was handed down.

Prosecutor Jairam Lukhai said that on the February 27, the police received certain information and as a result went to Bagotstown Public Road, in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, where they observed Martin and an accomplice for about two to five minutes. When they approached and conducted a search on their person, they found the articles mentioned in Martin’s right side pocket.

Before she ruled, the prosecution informed the magistrate that the defendant was currently facing a charge of robbery under arms committed in the East coast vicinity.
