Mottley: Set up company to take over CLICO assets

(Barbados Nation) Former Opposition Leader Mia Mottley wants Government to set up urgently a company to take whatever assets CLICO has left and pay the poor and sick who have pumped millions into the troubled insurance company.

Mottley also believes the CLICO judicial manager should not accept payment until after completion of work and policyholders have been reimbursed.

She told the large crowd at Haggatt Hall last night that the truth about the CLICO debacle was now coming to light, but that she had warned all and sundry 25 months before.

“When I brought the no-confidence motion in 2009 . . . , I was called subversive and unpatriotic. But time has proven to be my ally . . . ,” she said.

The former Opposition Leader suggested there ought to be a way of picking out the most vulnerable in the CLICO affair: they who had
no earning capacity.

“They may have assets, but can’t take a house to the supermarket to buy groceries. They can’t take a house to pay their water rates, which this Government raised by 16 per cent.

Pay the old people first. Pay the sick people first.”
