Horse cart man jailed for 12 months for assaulting wife

A 27-year-old horse cart operator was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to unlawfully wounding his reputed wife, and three months for unlawfully assaulting her when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates Court before Magistrate Priya Beharry.

According to police reports, on Saturday March 3, Mark Sawdoo unlawfully assaulted and wounded Tajmattie Beepat at their Albouystown home.
Sawdoo claimed his wife was unfaithful. He admitted that he lashed her with a plate and subsequently cuffed her about her body.

A report was made and he was later arrested and charged. After sentencing the man, the magistrate told him that he has the right to appeal the decision if he feels the sentence given to him is unjust.
