Taxi driver placed on $100,000 bail over stabbing

A 29-year-old taxi driver was yesterday placed on $100,000 bail after he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer the charge of unlawful wounding.

The charge read by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry is that on March 6 in Georgetown, Mervin Adams unlawfully and maliciously wounded Junior Flue causing him actual bodily harm. Adams pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the police’s case presented in court, Adams and Flue know each other. On the day in question, Flue was standing at the Mocha bus park, Stabroek Market Square, when Adams allegedly approached him and accused him of beating his brother. An argument ensued between them and resulted in the defendant taking a broken bottle and dealing Flue several stabs about his body.

Police in the area saw what transpired and arrested the defendant.

The prosecution had no objection to bail but stated that it should be granted in a substantial sum.

Adams’s lawyer made an application for a bail reduction but this was denied by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry, who cited the seriousness of the victim’s injuries as stated on his medical report.

The matter was transferred to Court 10 for March 15.
