Cops tying up loose ends in peacemaker murder probe

The suspect in the Phagwah Day fatal stabbing of Abdool Waheed Gani remained in police custody up to late yesterday afternoon as investigators were tying up loose ends in the case.

A police official told Stabroek News that detectives “still have some loose ends to tie up,” when asked about charges against the suspect yesterday.

Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination which was performed on the remains of Gani yesterday revealed that he died from shock and haemorrhage due to a stab wound.

Gani, of Lot 367 Enterprise and Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, died at the Woodlands Hospital, where he was taken shortly after he was stabbed in the abdomen.

The incident took place a stone’s throw away from the Carmichael Street hospital.

Police had said that the murder occurred around 11:45am, when the suspect, who was walking along Carmichael Street, was doused with water and abeer by children who were playing Phagwah. The suspect became annoyed and began to verbally abuse the children.

The police release said that Gani, who was working on a house nearby, rebuked the suspect for abusing the children, “whereupon the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed him to the chest.” The suspect was later arrested.
