Probe into Sparendaam shooting ongoing

Police are in possession of information that could provide leads in last Saturday’s shooting incident at Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara that has left two men nursing multiple gunshot wounds in hospital.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud when asked about a motive yesterday said that at this point all the police have is information and as such investigations are continuing. He did not elaborate on what this information is but said that both victims, Giovanni Leitch called ‘Joe Joe’ and Devon Agard called `Chucky’ were known characters to the police.

He said too that the analysis of the spent shells recovered at the scene is still ongoing.

Meanwhile the two men remained patients at the Georgetown Hospital up to press time last night. Leitch is still a patient of the Intensive Care Unit and according to relatives, he is coming around.

Agard is a patient of the ward and is said to be stable.

Based on accounts received by this newspaper the men both aged 21 years came under fire at Northslip Street, Sparendaam. They were attacked by gunmen who fired several shots, hitting Leitch four times about the body and Agard twice to his abdomen.

Police officials had told this newspaper that there were reports that Leitch was involved in a recent incident which ended with an attempt on his life. The other man, according to officials, seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Relatives of Leitch have since said that he was not involved in any wrong doing. Agard and his relatives have refused to speak to members of the press. Based on eyewitness accounts, at least eight shots were fired by two unmasked gunmen at the men as they headed to a barbershop in the Plaisance area.

Eyewitnesses told Stabroek News at the scene that the two young men were walking east along Market Street and as they neared an intersection, two men “calmly walked up and opened fire”.

After riddling the men with bullets, they said, the two gunmen walked away. One fled on foot while another jumped into a waiting yellow car which was parked on the Plaisance ‘line top’.

At least one person recalled seeing a man running away holding one of his pants’ pockets. Subsequent checks revealed the two wounded men lying on the roadway.
