Bajan tourism projecting higher airfares

(Barbados Nation) President of the Barbados Hotel& Tourism Association, Colin Jordan, is predicting higher fares for intra-regional Caribbean travel with the grounding of the Barbadian-based low-cost carrier REDjet.

Jordan told the MIDWEEK NATION on Monday “based on what existed a few months ago, if REDjet is not in the mix, we as a country can expect that airfares for travel within the region will increase and the number of persons flying to Barbados from Trinidad and other Caribbean countries will decline sharply”.

However, Trinidad and Tobago’s Caribbean Airlines said over the weekend that it had no intention of raising fares.

In a statement issued  on Friday, REDjet’s chairman and CEO Ian Burns said the airline was suspending flights until further notice, since it could “no longer provide affordable transport across the Caribbean” in the absence of government assistance.
