Girl 10, hospitalised after abduction, assault

A ten-year-old girl has been hospitalised after allegedly being abducted by a man who physically assaulted her and left her in an unconscious state in a clump of bushes in Sophia last Friday.

Up to press time last night, police were looking for the man, who is known to the child.

A source told this newspaper that the girl, who attends an East Coast Demerara school, was spotted by passers-by creeping out of the bushes and groaning.

Her face was badly swollen and evidence of bruising was visible. From all indications, there was an attempt to rape the child and during resistance, she was struck about the face and the body, particularly the eye which after several days remains discoloured.

This newspaper was told that the child, who is visibly traumatised, is now beginning to reveal details of her harrowing experience. She has disclosed that her attacker lives in her community.

Officials of the Child Care Protection Agency (CCPA) yesterday confirmed that they are investigating the case.
