Father accused of assaulting daughter said he was only disciplining her

A father of two  was initially placed on $60,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday to answer a charge of unlawful assault against his daughter.

However the matter was subsequently dismissed after the relatives of the VC who were in court decided to settle the matter.

Wendell Joseph who lives at East Rumvielt Housing Scheme with his two children and his mother allegedly beat his daughter, Tamika Joseph, on March 22, causing her to seek medical attention.

It is alleged that on the day in question a cousin of the virtual complainant (VC) received a call informing him that his uncle was beating his daughter. He then went to his uncle’s home and discovered that the girl was indeed being beaten.

The VC’s cousin then called the police and subsequently took her to the police station where a report was made. He was also advised by the police to take the VC to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) to seek medical attention and he did. Joseph was later arrested and charged.

He told the court that he was only disciplining the child and the police came and arrested him for doing so.
