Customs seizes $15M in illicit liquor

The Guyana Revenue Authority today said that on March 23, 2012 its enforcement arm seized $15M of uncustomed alcohol at Mahaica and five persons were arrested.

A release from the GRA said that the alcohol was being transported in a Bedford truck and comprised Ciroc Vodka, Johnny Walker (Black label), Hennessey, Smirnoff Vodka, Heineken beer and Tequila.

GRA said that when the Law Enforcement and Investigation Division intercepted the drivers and the porters they were unable to produce any documentation to prove that the goods were legally imported.

The five persons have been placed on bail and an investigation is underway. GRA said that more information will be released on the completion of the probe.
