Taxi driver took man’s money after promising firearm and licence

A taxi driver on a charge of fraudulent misappropriation was placed on $75,000 bail  yesterday by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Omali Kendell, 26, of 129 Brusche Dam Friendship, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

It is alleged that on December 31, 2011 at Georgetown, the accused collected $765,000 from Shariff Fause after  claiming that he was  in a  position to obtain a firearm and licence for him.

Kendell, however, allegedly converted the man’s money to his own use and purpose.

The  lawyer for the accused in his application for bail indicated to the court that his client is an ex-policeman and is not a flight risk and  he has started to pay back the money to the virtual complainant since last year.

The magistrate set bail on the condition that the accused must report to the Brickdam Police Station every Monday at 9:00am.

The matter will continue on April 16.
