NA prison inmate gets extra three years for drug trafficking

New Amsterdam prison inmate Kenneth Richardson, who is currently serving a 21-year sentence for manslaughter, escaping from lawful custody and larceny, was jailed for an additional three years after he pleaded guilty yesterday to narcotics trafficking.

Richardson appeared yesterday before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.

Police Inspector Ramlakhan, prosecuting, said Richardson, a current inmate at the New Amsterdam Prison, on January 20 last, was seen hugging a pillow during a routine search at a male dormitory.

A check was made within the head rest and the seeds, leaves, and stems of cannabis sativa were discovered inside.

Police at the Central Police Station were informed and the drug when weighed amounted to 32 grammes.

Richardson was one of nine convicts who on January 12, 2007, overpowered two guards at the Mazaruni Prison and made their way out.
