Repeat offender jailed over GT&T cable theft

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court delivered an 18-month jail sentence to repeat offender Sheldon Forde, who admitted to stealing telephone cable belonging to the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T).

The court heard that on March 27, 2012, at Thomas Lands, Georgetown, Forde stole a telephone cable, valued $160,000.

When read the charge, Forde pleaded guilty and said that he committed the crime in an effort to sell the cable to pay off some of his debts. He also admitted to having previous convictions on charges of larceny and promised not to do it again.

When asked by the magistrate if he ever tried getting a job, Forde said: “I does do a lil thing; clean up people yard and thing.”
