Nigerian headed for Suriname held with cocaine at Springlands

A Nigerian national was yesterday morning reportedly intercepted with 21 kilogrammes of cocaine as he was about to leave Guyana backtrack for Suriname.

Stabroek News understands that ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) acting on information received stopped the man as he was about to board a boat at a Springlands, Berbice backtrack crossing around 05:30 hrs.

A search of a suitcase he had in his possession unearthed the cocaine hidden between pieces of clothing.

He was immediately detained and questioned and will appear in court today.

This newspaper was told that in the light of Guyana’s porous border with Suriname, CANU has been stepping up its operation in Berbice paying special attention to the illegal boat crossings at Springlands.

CANU officials have made several huge cocaine busts in Berbice in recent times.
