Five held after gold robbery in Wenamu River

Police say that at about 1000h yesterday Guyanese national Mohan Lall, 45 years of Hampton Court, Essequibo; along with Venezuelan nationals Hector Benjamin Marine, 38 years; Frank Lopez, 47 years; Raquel Lopez, 27 years; Marian Salazar, 33 years and Yenna Hernandez, 32 years, were in the Wenamu River, Cuyuni, when they were held up by five men who were reported to be Venezuelan nationals and who were armed with a shotgun, knives and cutlasses.

Police say the perpetrators tied up the victims and took away a total of approximately 13 ounces of raw gold, $1,000.00 US, one cell phone and a quantity of imitation jewellery and escaped.

Police ranks and army personnel based at Eteringbang responded quickly to the report received and subsequently managed to arrest the five suspects and recover a 12-gauge Winchester shotgun with four cartridges, a quantity of raw gold and a quantity of imitation jewellery.

The men are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
