Vreed-en-Hoop road fatality identified as pensioner

The man killed in the accident on Thursday evening along the Vreed-en-Hoop Public Road, West Coast Demerara has been identified.
Sources at the Ezekiel Funeral Home, on the West Bank of Demerara, told Stabroek News that the police called the home to inform that man was identified as Wilfred Chung. However, a relative of the deceased is yet to make contact with them.

A car, reported to be speeding on the Vreed-en-Hoop Public Road sometime around 8pm, on Thursday night struck down the elderly man, dragging him several feet to a spot where subsequently died. However, the police had said the driver reported that the man was lying on the road when he ran over him. An autopsy will be performed on the man’s body today to determine the exact cause of death.

Persons in the area had said that they did not know the man but would often see him walking the streets in a drunken state. Some said he lived in a nearby shed but did not know his name. He was later taken to the Ezekiel Funeral home and listed as a “John Doe” pending identification.

Police took statements from eyewitnesses and gathered evidence at the scene and subsequently took the driver into custody.
