Robbers ambushed at Meten-Meer-Zorg

The Police on the West Coast of Demerara were commended for their prompt apprehension of three men who were about to break into the business place of Abdool Hamid at Lot 97 Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD yesterday.

The Police in a press release stated that at about 12.20 am yesterday Hamid reported to the police that a gang of men were breaking into his business place, to which they responded.  As the police patrol vehicle approached the area the men ran in different directions in their bid to escape.

The police subsequently gave chase and a rank caught up with Ramesh Persaud, 39 years, of De Kinderen, WCD, who reportedly attacked the rank with a piece of wood and dealt him several lashes about his body.

Police said that Persaud continued his attack on the policeman despite being called upon to desist, causing the rank to resort to the use of force and he discharged a round from his firearm which struck Persaud to his right side. The man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and subsequently admitted.

Two other men were arrested and cutting shears and a length of pointed iron were recovered at the scene by the police.

Hamid told Stabroek News that the bandits also attempted to break into his premises on Sunday night but they failed. He added that he observed that some of the zinc sheets on the building had been cut and pried open which aroused his suspicions that something was wrong.

He said “We does check the place every day and when we check Monday morning I see the zinc cut open and then me, the watchman and two staff hide in a corner and we wait for them”.

He said that sometime around 11:30 pm a gang of five men entered his premises and began to carefully work on the zinc again. He immediately summoned ranks from the Leonora Police Station and together they ambushed the men who all ran in different directions.

He related that after the men escaped the police gave chase and they were apprehended a few villages away.

The businessman said that this is the sixth time his business has been attacked but the first time the Police apprehended the culprits. He added that he plans to have security on his premises improved since robbery is prevalent in the community.

However, he commended the police for their prompt action and for the apprehension of the men. Investigations are ongoing.
